Creating a Home Prayer Table

During our distance learning, our students were invited to create a prayer table for their homes. Here is the invitation they received.

Hi everyone. This is Mrs. Miller. I pray everyone is doing well as we get used to our new way of learning. Today I would like to show you how you can create a prayer table in your home.  Each of our classrooms at South City Catholic Academy have prayer tables. This gives the children a place to pray silently, offer prayer intentions, read from the bible. We also have a prayer table in our atrium where our Junior kindergarten and kindergarten students gather once a week.

During this season of Lent our prayer table is dressed in purple. Purple is the color that reminds us that we are preparing for Easter – a time when Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.

Any small table that you might have in your house can be used. I am using purple fabric, but you could also use a purple placemat, tablecloth, or a piece of construction paper that your children decorated.

In the atrium we like to have a prayer card on the prayer table. During the season of Lent, we could add a prayer card that says PREPARE.   We are preparing our hearts and minds for Easter.

Your children could create their own prayer cards by drawing or writing this word themselves.

In the atrium we have a statue of the Good Shepherd.  Your children could draw their own picture of the Good Shepherd.  A statue of the Blessed Mother would also be nice to include. A rosary can be included.

We always have a candle. It could be a votive, a tea light, a small battery-operated candle. We light the candle when we pray and when we read from the bible because it reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world.

A Vase of branches during Lent mimics what we might see in the real church during Lent.

A cross can be placed on your prayer table.

We want to include a bible. The bible is where we hear God’s words. Reading Psalm 23 as a family would be nice during this season of Lent.

Praying before meals or after meals or before bed are all good times to pray as a family. The prayer table is a place which your family can become prayerfully centered.

Enjoy this time together as a family. If you have any questions about your prayer table, please feel free to reach out. God Bless.

(These pictures are a beautiful way in which our students have responded!) Nice job everyone.
