My name is Jessica Burns, and this is my second year in my current position at South City Catholic Academy. I teach Religion to my 6th grade homeroom, Course 2 Math, and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Science classes.
Science has been very busy this year! In 6th grade, we just finished a unit on the states of matter where we made ice cream, tested the solubility of different materials, and found the mass of objects using triple beam and electric balances. We have also been preparing for our field trip to the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center by going outside to explore our world.
In 7th grade, we just completed our electricity unit where students made series and parallel circuits, tested conductors and insulators, and designed a product using electric circuits to power the object. 7th grade is now moving on to energy transformations. The key project in this unit is having the students work in a group to create a Rube Goldberg machine.
In 8th grade, we have begun the unit on structures and functions. The students learned about cell structure, dissected flowers, examined objects using microscopes, and have started dissecting worms. Our culminating project will have students design an interactive exhibit on a body system.
As you can imagine, the Science Lab gets very busy. I greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and know that you are in mine.
