First off, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sarah Wibbenmeyer and I am from Jackson, Missouri. I moved to St. Louis last year, and this is my second year here at South City Catholic Academy. I am very happy to be a part of this wonderful community and be able to share a bit of what first grade is like.
We had the privilege of going on a field trip to the Police Station to further our education on why we have rules and laws. We also learned more about being respectful and responsible citizens. This was a great opportunity to look up to, and learn from, those that hold such a big responsibility in our community.
In Religion, first graders got to take a tour of the church with Fr Craig. We identified many holy objects in a Catholic Church building, and learned their purpose. Some of these terms we studied are: alter, ambo, tabernacle, sanctuary, baptismal font, and blessed sacrament. The knowledge gained from this prepares them to be able to experience the church in a special way, and begin to understand our sacred space. We also get frequent visits from Fr Sebastian in our classroom and they love it. He always greets us with a smile and helps us in our “after mass discussions” about church etiquette and the readings from that day.
In science, we studied birds and animals and how they are like their parents. After learning all about birds’ habitats and how they are different than each other, we were challenged to build a bird nest of our own that would hold eggs. This was a lot of fun!
We are also busy building a foundation for math and literacy. They are working so hard!
We appreciate all your thoughts and prayers and will continue to keep you in ours!
