JK, K, and 1st grade have FUN as they get physical with OCTOPUS TAG!

COACH introduced a new game this week for Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade: OCTOPUS TAG.. One student gets to be the Octopus and runs around the gym trying to tag his/her classmates. If a student is tagged by the octopus, their feet become frozen to the floor and their arms stick straight out: They are seaweed!

This is just one example of the many CREATIVE and FUN ways SCCA teachers bring learning to our school.

SCCA Fifth Grade Hosts Career Fair

Recently, the SCCA Fifth Grade hosted a career fair as a culminating event of a Language Arts unit. During the five week Language Arts unit the students learned how to read and comprehend informational text regarding various careers. After reading, asking questions, and engaging in critical thinking, the students chose a career and formulated a presentation. SCCA classes were able to peruse the career boards and ask questions regarding the many outstanding careers. Way to go Fifth Grade on a Job Well Done!!!!

The Passion of Christ

Recently, the SCCA school community gathered to witness a special Living Stations of the Cross. SCCA 7th grade worked very hard to prepare a powerful presentation of the Passion of Christ. Each station was told through the voice of Mary. Can you imagine the pain his mother felt watching her son be put to death?

SCCA Community Participates in Burning of the Palms

On Tuesday, February 13, the SCCA school community gathered for the Burning of Palms ceremony as we burned the blessed palms we received on Palm Sunday last year.  This was our final preparation for Lent. The palm is a sign of victory, triumph, and peace and were used as the people welcomed Jesus as He made His triumphant entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  Deprived of water for a year, our palms have become dried and withered just as our spiritual lives may be dry because of sin.  Palm ash then becomes a sign of repentance and a need for redemption by Jesus.  In an earlier era, ash was a principal part in fertilizer which is necessary to stir up growth.  Now palm ash serves as a way of stirring each of us as we draw closer to Christ in Lent.

SCCA celebrates Catholic Schools Week !!!

SCCA began Catholic Schools Week with an Open House. Many current AND new families toured the school on Sunday, January 28th. Students beamed with pride as they showed off many of the wonderful things they have learned throughout the year.

The week progressed with lots of fun activities and culminated in a faculty/ 8th grade volleyball game.

Through these fun and exciting events, SCCA focused on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

Girls On The Run is so much FUN!!!

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a program that teaches girls the importance of being yourself and treating others with kindness. Over the past several months, a team of 3rd-5th grade girls have gathered together and participated in activities which promote understanding themselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, & recognizing how they can positively shape the world at large. They have built skills such as using a STAR power, showing empathy, choosing friends, and so much more. In addition, the girls also practice building endurance for a final 5K at the end of the program which is held at Forest Park with thousands of other GOTR girls from the surrounding area.
Here are some thoughts of the girls in the program:
“It's the most amazing thing ever”-Madeline S (3rd grade)
“Girls on the run is a fun opportunity to get to know others better and you feel great after you do it!” -Kaydence S. (4th grade)
“Fun program and you’ll love it for the rest of your life” -Amily (5th grade)

Reggio Inspired Outdoor Project

With our early childhood program being Reggio inspired, South City Catholic Academy strives to use our environment as the third teacher. As such, we place a large priority on bringing elements of outdoor education and the environment to our work.  The JK, K, 1, and 2 have each identified a space outdoors that their class will be working on.
